# Ideogram Precise Edit Adds Context Windows for Full-Resolution Image Edits

The update lets developers change a small region of a large image without shrinking the whole file first.

Ideogram has added context windows to Precise Edit, allowing targeted changes inside high-resolution images while preserving the original dimensions. Announced on October 29, the update addresses a practical problem: fixing one detail should not require reducing the quality of the entire photograph.

## What changed in Ideogram Precise Edit

This is an upgrade to editing with Ideogram 4.5, not the launch of a new model version. The [announcement](https://x.com/ideogram_ai/status/2115843973889839388) says the feature is available in the app and API, with the area outside the context window left unchanged.

Ideogram's [feature guide](https://ideogram.ai/tools/precise-edit/) describes support for images up to 8K. The model works on a smaller region at the image's original pixel resolution rather than shrinking the full frame to fit its editing budget. That is useful for product photos, lettering and small objects that occupy only a fraction of a large image.

The difference becomes clear with a small label in a photograph. Downscaling the whole photo also shrinks the label, leaving less detail for the model to work with. Selecting a local region keeps those pixels available. This does not guarantee a correct label, but it removes an avoidable source of lost detail.

## A mask and a context window do different jobs

The mask identifies the pixels to change. The context window determines the surrounding area supplied for the edit. Keeping some surrounding information can help a replacement fit the existing light, material and perspective.

The [API documentation](https://developer.ideogram.ai/api-reference/images/precise-edit/ideogram-4-5) supports `context_window=auto` with a mask, or explicit coordinates in `y_min,x_min,y_max,x_max` order. The default `none` mode processes the full image and can downscale large inputs.

A working region can cover at most 4,194,304 pixels, with sides of at least 256 pixels and an aspect ratio between 1:6 and 6:1. That is a local editing budget, not a 2K limit on the final image.

There is an important fallback: if an automatic mask selects more than that area, the request edits the whole image with downscaling instead. Selecting `auto` alone therefore does not guarantee full-resolution output.

Black mask pixels mark the edit area; white marks what should stay. Check that convention before reusing a mask from another workflow.

## Precise Edit pricing

Ideogram's [feature guide](https://ideogram.ai/tools/precise-edit/) lists four quality tiers for Precise Edit:

| Quality | Price per image |
| --- | --- |
| Very low | $0.008 |
| Low | $0.03 |
| Medium | $0.06 |
| High | $0.22 |

These are Ideogram's published prices, not a claim that every partner platform bills identically. For API integrations, the documentation also describes `dry_run`, which validates and prices a request without generating or billing an image. It is useful for checking the request a product is about to submit.

## What still needs checking

Preserving the area outside an edit reduces one class of error. It does not prove the replacement itself is accurate. Product colours, brand lettering and architectural details still need review against the intended reference.

For a production workflow, compare the original and returned dimensions, inspect the changed region closely and verify that the result matches the requested change. A sharp but incorrect detail is still incorrect.

The useful shift is that a local correction can remain local, both in the pixels being processed and in the review it requires. That makes iterative image work easier to reason about than repeatedly regenerating an entire composition to repair one small part.
