# GitHub Replica: Open-Source AI Prototyping With Your Design System

Replica brings product ideas into a working interface, but its local setup and optional hosting solve different problems.

GitHub open-sourced Replica on October 28, an AI prototyping tool that uses a team's own components and design guidance. It works alongside the Copilot app and is available under the MIT license. Teams can prototype locally or run an optional Hub for shared feedback.

The useful distinction is the starting point. A convincing generic interface can still be expensive to translate into a real product. Replica is designed to begin with the patterns the team already uses.

## What GitHub Replica does

The [release announcement](https://github.blog/changelog/2026-10-28-introducing-replica-an-open-source-ai-prototyping-tool/) describes a workflow where designers supply components, patterns and documentation, then product managers, designers and engineers use natural-language requests to explore interfaces. A prototype can be tested and revised next to the Copilot conversation.

This is particularly relevant when a product discussion is stuck between a written specification and a static mockup. An interactive example makes it easier to ask whether a flow works before committing to a full implementation.

## Local setup versus Replica Hub

The [official repository](https://github.com/github/replica) provides starters, a canvas plugin and an optional Hub. Local work needs the Copilot app, Git, Node.js and npm on macOS or Linux, but no server or domain.

Shared hosting adds a Linux server, wildcard DNS, HTTPS and the necessary GitHub permissions. The Hub lets colleagues view published prototypes and comment. Viewing finished work does not require a Copilot subscription.

For generation, developers can use GitHub-hosted models with a Copilot plan or connect their own provider through a public-preview option. Provider charges and terms still apply. **An MIT-licensed tool does not make model inference or hosting free.**

## Where the design work remains

Replica's value depends on the quality of the guidance it receives. If a team has conflicting component conventions or undocumented accessibility requirements, a faster prototype can reproduce those gaps faster too.

Treat the result as an experiment, not an automatic production release. Test keyboard behavior, empty states, error handling and whether the proposed interaction belongs in the actual product. Those questions are easy to overlook when a generated screen already looks convincing.

Self-hosting also deserves a narrow interpretation. Operating the Hub yourself does not establish that all model processing stays inside your organization; the repository explicitly distinguishes Hub activity from GitHub and AI-provider data handling.

The strongest use of Replica is to shorten the distance between an idea and useful feedback, without mistaking a working demonstration for a finished feature.
