Claude Ultra Replaces Max 20x: Pricing, Weekly Limits and What Changes

The $200 plan loses its five-hour limit for verified accounts, but that does not make Claude usage unlimited.

Anthropic renamed Claude Max 20x to Ultra on October 30 and began removing the five-hour usage limit for verified Ultra accounts. The price remains $200 a month. Max 5x becomes Max at $100 a month, while weekly limits stay unchanged.

The name change is straightforward. The more useful change is being able to concentrate work into a longer session without hitting a separate short-window limit. That could matter more than a larger weekly allowance for someone who uses Claude intensively on a few days rather than evenly throughout the week.

Claude Max vs Ultra pricing

Anthropic's official announcement says existing subscribers do not need to take action. The migration begins with most existing Ultra subscribers; newer accounts retain a temporary session limit until verified.

PlanPrevious nameMonthly web priceFive-hour limitWeekly capacity
MaxMax 5x$100Still applies5 times Pro
UltraMax 20x$200Removed for verified accounts10 times Pro

The Max documentation specifies five times Pro's usage both per five-hour period and per week. Ultra's current documentation specifies ten times Pro's weekly usage. The former “20x” name should not be read as a promise of twenty times Pro's weekly allocation: Anthropic explicitly says weekly limits have not changed in this update.

These are monthly web subscription prices. Mobile pricing may differ. Both plans include Claude Code and support longer, multi-step work; Ultra is an individual subscription, not an enterprise plan.

What a verified Ultra account means

According to the Ultra help page, verification happens automatically using factors including account and payment history. It is separate from verifying a phone number at checkout.

You do not need to submit a new request to remove the temporary limit. Anthropic says it will email users when the limit is removed. In Settings, open Usage: if there is no Current session bar, the account is verified.

The distinction is important for a new subscriber. Paying for Ultra does not necessarily mean the five-hour limit disappears immediately. The announcement does not provide a fixed verification deadline.

Ultra still has weekly limits

Removing the session limit changes when you can use your allowance, not whether an allowance exists. Ultra retains a weekly limit across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable. Anthropic also reserves the ability to apply other capacity and fair-access restrictions.

For a developer working through a difficult migration, the potential benefit is continuity. A task that previously ran into the five-hour boundary may be able to continue, provided weekly capacity remains. For someone already exhausting the weekly allowance, this announcement does not add more of it.

That is the practical comparison to make before changing plans: is the interruption caused by a short session limit or by total weekly consumption? Those are different problems, and this update primarily addresses the first.

API credits are a separate allowance

Anthropic's API-credit documentation lists $100 monthly credits for Max and $200 for Ultra. Eligible subscribers claim them into a linked Claude Console organization after seven days on the plan.

Those credits can fund applications built on the Claude Platform. They do not increase the subscription's Claude or Claude Code usage limits, and they do not cover interactive Claude Code sessions. Unused monthly credits expire rather than rolling over.

This separation makes the plan easier to evaluate. Subscription capacity supports your own work with Claude; API credits support software you build around the models. Counting both as one interchangeable pool would overstate what the subscription buys.

What changes for heavy Claude users

The meaningful improvement is flexibility within the week. A fixed total allowance can become more useful when you can spend it around real workloads instead of repeatedly waiting for a short-window reset.

The next question is whether that flexibility reduces actual interruptions for verified accounts. The new name is less important than how often a working session can reach a useful stopping point.
