ChatGPT Pro Limits: OpenAI Cancels the Pro 200 Reduction
Pro 100 and Pro 500 get more Work and Codex usage, while Pro 200 loses a confusing split between subscribers.
OpenAI has canceled its planned ChatGPT Pro 200 usage reduction and increased Work and Codex allowances across the Pro lineup. The October 29 change doubles the allowance for Pro 100 and Pro 500, while bringing lower-allowance Pro 200 subscribers up to the higher limit.
For someone deciding whether to keep a subscription, the useful change is straightforward: the previously announced Pro 200 cut is no longer happening. That does not mean every model, message limit or speed mode has become twice as generous.
What changed for each ChatGPT Pro plan
OpenAI's October 29 release notes distinguish between subscribers who already had the higher Pro 200 allowance and those who did not.
| Plan | Work and Codex change |
|---|---|
| Pro 100 | Twice the previous allowance |
| Pro 200, previously on the higher allowance | Keeps that allowance; planned reduction canceled |
| Pro 200, previously on the lower allowance | Doubles to match the higher allowance |
| Pro 500 | Twice the previous allowance |
The canceled reduction was communicated in a September 29 email. If an older explanation still describes an upcoming cut, the October 29 announcement supersedes it. OpenAI also names Business Premium in its increase announcement, but that note does not provide a matching numerical breakdown for Business Premium.
Pricing and access do not require a subscription workaround
The current Pro help page lists Pro 100 at $100 per month, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500. New Pro 200 subscriptions are available and receive the updated allowance. Existing subscribers receive the change automatically without waiting for renewal.
There is no need to cancel and subscribe again to obtain it. The important distinction is the plan you buy, rather than whether you preserved a particular older Pro 200 subscription.
Plus usage is unchanged. Ultrafast also remains exclusive to Pro 500; a larger Pro 200 allowance does not add that speed mode.
Work allowance and Chat message limits are different
Pro 100 and Pro 500 keep their existing weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat. For Pro 200, the lower weekly Chat limit now matches the higher one, while subscribers already on the higher limit keep it.
These limits are separate from the Work and Codex allowance. That distinction matters when a subscriber sees more room for coding work but still encounters a model-specific Chat limit. The update is not a promise that every usage meter moves together.
Why twice the allowance does not mean twice the work
OpenAI's Work and Codex pricing documentation explains that the two experiences share usage. The amount consumed varies with the model and the work being performed. API token pricing is a separate billing system, not a reliable shortcut for converting a subscription into a fixed number of completed tasks.
A small code edit and a long investigation across a repository are different workloads. More allowance gives the second task more room, but it does not make its context, tool calls or reasoning disappear. Likewise, moving to a more expensive speed setting can spend the additional room faster.
For a practical comparison, keep the model and settings consistent and watch the usage dashboard during representative work. Otherwise, an apparent change in value may actually be a change in how you are using the product.
The useful question after this update is how often a plan interrupts the work you actually need to finish. Removing the older Pro 200 allowance split makes that comparison simpler. A headline multiplier alone still cannot answer it.
