ChatGPT iCloud Mail and Calendar Plugins: Setup, Access and Permissions

ChatGPT adds iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins across all plans. See how setup works, which Apple accounts to use and what the permission controls change.

ChatGPT can now connect to iCloud Mail and Calendar. OpenAI announced the plugins on October 27, giving Apple users a way to find messages, catch up on their inbox and manage calendar events from a ChatGPT conversation.

The release notes list support across all ChatGPT plans on web, desktop and iOS. The practical setup detail is that Mail and Calendar are separate connections, with different account-address requirements.

What the iCloud plugins include

OpenAI's connected-app documentation describes a global rollout, subject to workspace app controls. Both plugins include read-only contact lookup. Standalone Contacts and Reminders plugins are outside this launch.

That gives the rollout a useful boundary. Looking up a contact while working on email is supported; it does not establish that ChatGPT can create a new Apple Reminder or manage an entire Contacts database.

For someone whose appointments and correspondence already live in iCloud, the value is less copying between applications. A question about the week's schedule can use calendar information, while an inbox catch-up can draw on connected mail. Whether a particular action runs still depends on the plugin's capabilities and the permissions in effect.

How to connect iCloud Mail and Calendar

Start in ChatGPT's Settings, then Plugins. Select the relevant plugin, install it if needed and follow its connection flow. OpenAI's account-connection guide specifies these credentials:

  • For iCloud Mail, use an address ending in @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com.
  • For Calendar, use your primary Apple Account email address. It may differ from your iCloud Mail address.
  • Enter an Apple app-specific password in the connection form. Do not use your regular Apple password or paste either password into the conversation.

Connect each service separately if you want both. Installing one plugin does not authorize the other.

Apple's app-specific password instructions require two-factor authentication on the Apple Account. Generate the password from the account's Sign-In and Security section, then enter it into the app's password field.

If you change or reset your main Apple Account password, Apple revokes its app-specific passwords automatically. A connection that subsequently stops working may need a replacement password and reconnection.

Choose when ChatGPT should ask

OpenAI's permission guide separates access from approval. Connecting an account provides access; permission settings determine when ChatGPT asks before using it.

Where available, Always ask requires approval for reads and changes. Allow read actions permits reading without a prompt but asks before changes. Allow low-risk actions permits some activity automatically, while higher-risk requests can require confirmation or be denied.

The available choices vary by account and workspace. An Allow all actions option, where offered for an individual connection, carries elevated risk. It is absent from the standard account-wide and workspace-wide selectors.

For a first connection, I would start with a narrow read task and inspect the result before allowing changes. Ask for tomorrow's appointments, for example, and check the calendar and time zone. That is a practical way to catch an account mismatch before asking the assistant to reschedule anything.

Data controls and disconnecting

OpenAI says app information is not used for model training by default for Business, Enterprise and Edu customers. For Free, Plus, Go and Pro users, it may be used when Improve the model for everyone is enabled. Review that setting separately from action permissions.

Disconnecting a plugin stops future access through that connection. It does not automatically remove earlier conversations or saved memories. It also does not revoke the app-specific password at Apple; that is a separate step in Apple's account controls.

For teams evaluating connected assistants, this is the part worth documenting alongside the feature list: which account is connected, which actions need review and what remains after disconnection. Those details determine how comfortably people can use the integration with real correspondence.
