# ChatGPT Account Switching Comes to iOS and Android: How It Works

You can keep two accounts signed in on your phone, but your work and personal context remain separate.

OpenAI began rolling out account switching in the ChatGPT iOS and Android apps on October 30. You can keep two accounts signed in and move between them without logging out. Chats, memory, settings and subscriptions remain separate, which matters if you use ChatGPT for both work and personal tasks.

The [release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) describe a mobile rollout, not a new shared account. The benefit is less login friction. It does not turn two subscriptions or two conversation histories into one.

## How to switch ChatGPT accounts on your phone

Open Settings, choose Switch account, then Add account and sign in. After that, use Switch account to select the other account. Only one is active at a time.

According to OpenAI's [account-switching guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001068-using-multiple-chatgpt-accounts-on-web-and-mobile), Add account disappears when two accounts are already signed in. Log out of one before adding another. If Switch account is missing entirely, the rollout may not have reached you yet.

## What happens to chats, memory and subscriptions?

**Switching accounts does not merge their data or plans.** Files stay separate too. A paid subscription on one account does not give the other account the same plan.

For someone keeping client work apart from personal questions, that separation is useful. But it also means you should not expect context from one account to help a conversation in the other. If an answer seems to be missing familiar context, checking the active account is a sensible first step.

## Notifications can change the active account

Mobile notifications can arrive for both accounts, subject to settings and device permissions. Opening a notification from the other account switches to it. Check the active account before uploading a document.

Switching accounts is also different from switching workspaces inside one account. Managed-account policies still apply.

The useful habit is to treat the account selector as part of choosing where the work belongs, rather than only as a faster login button.
