M6 MacBook Pro and iMac: Prices, Local AI Performance and Memory Limits

Apple's new Macs improve local AI performance, but memory configuration still determines which models and workloads make sense.

Apple announced the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 and an M6 iMac on October 27. Both bring faster on-device AI hardware, with preorders scheduled for October 28 and availability from November 6. For developers running local models, memory capacity and bandwidth deserve as much attention as Apple's performance claims.

These are new Mac configurations, not evidence that every AI task becomes faster by the same amount. A model that does not fit comfortably in memory can remain a poor experience even on a newer chip.

M6 Mac prices and configurations

Apple's MacBook Pro announcement sets the U.S. starting price at $1,999. The iMac announcement lists two starting configurations.

ModelCPU / GPUStarting U.S. priceUnified memory options
14-inch MacBook Pro M612 / 12 cores$1,99916GB, 24GB or 32GB
iMac M6 base10 / 10 cores$1,49916GB or 24GB
iMac M6 higher configuration12 / 12 cores$1,69916GB, 24GB or 32GB

The memory options come from Apple's MacBook Pro specifications and iMac specifications. The cheaper iMac does not offer the same 32GB ceiling as the higher configuration.

For India, Apple's local announcement lists the MacBook Pro from INR 239,900. These are starting prices, not prices for the maximum-memory configurations.

What Apple's AI benchmarks actually measure

Apple reports up to 1.3 times faster time to first token for LLM prompt processing on the M6 MacBook Pro versus the M5 model. For iMac, it reports up to five times faster prompt processing in LM Studio versus M4. These are different comparisons against different previous machines, not a head-to-head ranking of the new Macs.

Time to first token measures how quickly output begins after a request. It does not tell you the sustained rate of generated tokens, how a long conversation behaves, or whether a larger model will fit. Apple's results are vendor tests, and this article does not provide independent benchmark measurements.

The iMac's large generational claim therefore should not be used to conclude it is five times faster than the new laptop. A useful comparison would run the same model, quantization, context length and runtime on both.

The memory detail worth checking

The MacBook Pro specification lists 153GB/s bandwidth for its 16GB M6 configuration and 170GB/s for the 24GB and 32GB configurations. The headline maximum is not the specification of every machine sold under the same chip name.

Unified memory must accommodate the operating system, applications, model weights and inference working memory. Longer contexts can increase that working-memory requirement. Faster compute helps with the work that fits, but it cannot make a small memory configuration equivalent to a larger one.

Choose the model and workload first, then evaluate the Mac configuration. For a local document assistant, that means testing representative documents and conversation lengths, not only a short prompt on an empty desktop.

Local inference and Apple Intelligence are different choices

Running a downloaded model locally is separate from using Apple's system AI features. Apple notes that some Apple Intelligence features rely on server-side models and have daily usage limits. Buying a Mac with stronger local hardware does not make every assistant interaction offline or unlimited.

The practical benefit of these new machines will vary with the application. A developer experimenting with compact models may value responsiveness and portability; someone needing larger models may hit the memory ceiling first. The useful next evidence is reproducible testing of actual configurations, especially the base models people are most likely to buy.
